Internal Notes for Reviewers

sc-10467

.slideover

I reimplemented the new .slideover extension convention (including v 1.3.1 fix nrichers/slideover#17) for our revamped training courses:

  • Developer Fundamentals
  • Validator Fundamentals

How to test

Since the online preview won't display the notebook iFrames correctly (it pulls the relative link from the root of the docs-demo repo rather than the PR branch):

  1. Grab this PR: gh pr checkout 740
  2. Make sure you're in the site directory if you're not already: cd site
  3. Pull up a live preview:quarto preview
  4. Review the modules in the training portal under:
    • Developer Fundamentals
    • Validator Fundamentals

Note

I found that the preview function seems to be really slow recently — perhaps due to the recent sitemap we've started generating? — as a result, some slides that have an .auto-collapse timer don't render fully before the modal collapses, but this shouldn't be an issue on our live site.

validmind-slideover.css

  • Our custom slideover theming lives in a template under: /training/assets/validmind-slideover.css
  • If the extension is ever updated past the existing installed version, the CSS will need to be re-applied to: _extensions/nrichers/slideover/custom-slideover.css
  • I've included this information in the course template slide:

PR Summary

This pull request introduces several enhancements to the Reveal.js Slideover plugin and associated documentation. The key changes include:

  1. CSS Enhancements:

    • A new custom-slideover.css file has been added to provide additional styling options for the slideover plugin. This includes global variables for colors and styles, emphasis borders for different alignments, link styling, callout embed styling, emphasis styling, quotation styling, and code styling.
    • Modifications to slideover.css to improve the styling and layout of the slideover elements, including adjustments to the toggle arrow logic, mobile responsiveness, and various slideover effects for different alignments (right, left, top, bottom).
  2. JavaScript Enhancements:

    • The slideover.js file has been refactored to streamline the initialization and handling of slideover overlays. This includes improvements in the setup process, handling of overlays, and event listeners for slide changes and fragment visibility.
    • The code has been cleaned up by removing unnecessary console logs and simplifying the logic for adding classes and event listeners.
  3. Documentation Updates:

    • Several documentation files have been updated to include instructions for using the slideover plugin in various training and guide contexts. This includes adding the slideover plugin to the revealjs-plugins section in multiple .qmd files.
    • Additional instructions and steps have been added to the documentation to guide users through the process of interacting with the slideover elements in the training modules.

These changes aim to enhance the user experience by providing more flexible styling options and improving the functionality and maintainability of the slideover plugin.

Test Suggestions

  • Test the appearance and functionality of the slideover plugin with the new custom styles applied.
  • Verify that the slideover elements respond correctly to different alignments (right, left, top, bottom) and screen sizes.
  • Check the toggle functionality to ensure it correctly opens and closes the slideover content.
  • Test the integration of the slideover plugin in the updated documentation files to ensure they display and function as expected.
  • Ensure that the JavaScript refactoring does not introduce any regressions in the slideover behavior.

PR Summary

This pull request introduces several enhancements to the Slideover plugin used in the project. The key changes include:

  1. Custom Styling: A new CSS file custom-slideover.css has been added to provide custom styling for the Slideover plugin. This includes global variables for colors and styles for various elements such as links, callouts, emphasis, quotations, and code blocks.

  2. JavaScript Enhancements: The JavaScript for the Slideover plugin has been refactored to improve readability and functionality. This includes:

    • Simplified logic for handling overlays and toggles.
    • Removal of console logs and error handling for a cleaner codebase.
    • Improved event handling for slide changes and fragment visibility.
    • Auto-collapse functionality for overlays with customizable delay.
  3. Integration with Reveal.js: The Slideover plugin is now integrated with Reveal.js presentations, allowing for interactive and collapsible content within slides.

  4. Documentation Updates: Several documentation files have been updated to include instructions for using the Slideover plugin within the training and guide sections.

These changes aim to enhance the user experience by providing a more visually appealing and functional Slideover plugin, while also improving the maintainability of the code.

Test Suggestions

  • Test the Slideover plugin in a Reveal.js presentation to ensure overlays appear and function correctly.
  • Verify that the custom styles in custom-slideover.css are applied as expected across different elements.
  • Check the auto-collapse functionality by adding the auto-collapse class to an overlay and observing the behavior.
  • Ensure that the JavaScript refactoring does not introduce any regressions by testing all overlay directions (top, bottom, left, right).
  • Test the integration of the Slideover plugin in various documentation and training pages to ensure consistency and functionality.
