Remarks on Google Scholar data
Citation counts for 2023 decreased by ~10% vs the 2024 release. Spot checks indicate that this may reflect a more accurate prediction of the total number of citations on the search result landing page [1], but perhaps also some change in methodology (e.g. concerning deduplication, or change in policy for what sources to include).
In the 2025 release the 2022 citation counts now appear like an outlier (too high). It remains to be seen whether this is a real effect or due to a change in methodology on the Google Scholar side that has not yet propagated through all previous years
