@Lennonka I looked at your draft PR and thought about possible structure. Please see the new "Proposed TOC 2" frame in the Miro board and let me know what you think. Here's a screenshot for anyone who does not have access to the Miro board. |

I've drafted a preliminary structure. I'll modularize it properly once we agree on what it should look like. |

@apinnick @maximiliankolb @ekohl Please, take a look at the proposed structure (New structure part) and let me know what you think. I kept the Old structure for comparison. |
|
@apinnick @maximiliankolb @ekohl Can you please take a look and give me some feedback so that things move forward? |

I like the new structure in "master.adoc" 👍 I see this as a great improvement to current downstream docs and #2781
I like splitting off these topics from the installation/administration guide. Content-wise, I'd trust you and on further technical reviews.
|
Splitting the guides makes sense, but I think we should be a bit more user-oriented here: |

I left various inline comments, but you may recognize one trend: I'd like to move away from "Internal" vs "External".
In https://community.theforeman.org/t/should-we-continue-supporting-managed-dhcp-in-foreman/42261/3 I describe what I think makes the most sense. Short summary is that I see unmanaged subnet/domain as "Foreman can't get any details". Managed subnet/domain then means Foreman can manage the resource. Additionally for some the installer can even manage the service.
I'm leaning to:
- Managed service
- Managed resources (=Managed subnet/domain)
- Unmanaged resources
Does that make any sense or is it just me?
|
@ekohl I'm confused because I thought we wanted to move away from the managed/unmanaged terminology altogether. |
|
Well, I'm not entirely sure what is the right approach. Consider my comments as thinking out loud and I welcome any better suggestions. |

I populated the guide with the existing content and slightly changed the structure of Lena's TOC proposal. If you're curious, you can check the preview. However, there's no need to comment on the draft yet. I'll meet with the SMEs on Friday to present my draft and discuss the ideas behind it. It's likely that the draft will change. I summarized the changes of the draft in the RH ticket (the comment is public). |

In a meeting last Friday with @ekohl and @evgeni, we discussed the following strategy: In this pull request, we prepare the new guide with the existing content and only fill the empty sections. The new guide should be available for Satellite 6.17 so that this project don't need to be postponed again (we don't want to introduce restructured docs in the middle of a release). After this pull request was merged, I'll start rewriting and improving the content (this will be in a separate pull request). Latest preview of the new guide: Configuring DNS, DHCP, and TFTP integration The following sections contain new content or have been created with content partially taken from existing files:
^^^ These sections need to be checked by development if they are technically correct. The rest of the guide contains only existing content with minor changes (renamed title, new/updated xrefs, content merged from multiple modules, etc.) - nothing that should break the technical part or the procedures itself. A sanity check to find bugs makes sense, but an in-depth review should not be done yet (we'll do this when I'll work on the content improvements in the future). |

I took a first look at this and focused on the files where you added notes that they should be verified.

Great proposal! This PR looks reasonable to me. I cannot comment much on the individual tech etc, but I like the structure. It somewhat matches what I'm doing downstream.
I like that we move these three parts into a new standalone guide! One suggestion: If we move anchors that contain {context}, then I highly recommend dropping it from the anchor if possible. We'll have to fix links anyway, so I strongly prefer dropping the attribute to simplify future maintenance.
There are some issues esp. with whitespace, but I will make suggestions at a later stage of your PR. I also want to explicitely check modules that are deleted if something got lost along the way.
Is it on purpose that we say "DNS DHCP TFTP" instead of "DHCP DNS TFTP"?
I will do a style-review as soon as you ping me/this PR is marked as ready for review.
Thanks everyone who's working on this! 🎉

This may be a follow up, but in the Provisioning hosts guide we should refer to this new guide. I think the "Using PXE to provision hosts" should direct users here and in some cases it should be a prerequisite.
For example, https://docs.theforeman.org/nightly/Provisioning_Hosts/index-katello.html#foreman-and-dhcp-configuration should IMHO be merged into this new guide. Arguably the same for https://docs.theforeman.org/nightly/Provisioning_Hosts/index-katello.html#Troubleshooting_DHCP_Problems_provisioning.
Taking a step back: this new guide is for the server admin persona. This person has full (root) access to the Foreman/Foreman Proxy machine. IMHO the provisioning hosts guide is for the user persona. This user may not have (root) access to the infrastructure and can only use what's already configured. Hence why you'd add it as prerequisites. It may be difficult to be exact there so it's likely a future improvement.

This is (currently) also the default that the installer can manage so this should IMHO point to the installer-managed DHCP service section. It should also be the default we point to.

I added an xref to the installer-managed DHCP service section.

Big thanks to @mmuehlfeldRH for being so patient in addressing the many, many comments. Also to @aneta-petrova and @maximiliankolb for reviewing. There's 1 more follow up that I want to add: realm support. Realm support really is in the same category as DHCP, DNS and TFTP: you only use it when provisioning hosts and it's tied to a Smart Proxy. That means it applies to both ProjectServer and SmartProxyServer. We have https://docs.theforeman.org/nightly/Installing_Server/index-katello.html#configuring-project-to-manage-the-lifecycle-of-a-host-registered-to-a-freeipa-realm_foreman which documents it. In ce3593c it was (rightfully) moved out of the authentication part and I think it belongs in this new guide. |

What changes are you introducing?
Extracting DNS, DHCP, and TFTP configuration from Installing guides to a special new guide
Why are you introducing these changes? (Explanation, links to references, issues, etc.)
The network services can be configured at any later time. They don't have to be configured during installation. The installation guides are too long.
