Troughs are an item used in livestock husbandry.

Troughs can be used to automatically feed and water animals. They can either be filled with an inventory of edible items, or with one water bucket to act as a permanent water source. Animals will seek out both food and water troughs if hungry or thirsty.

Troughs are compatible with hoppers, and can automatically be filled with food.

Adjacent troughs placed facing the same direction can connect, similar to double chests. Connected troughs share a new, larger combined inventory.

Troughs do not take up a full block vertically, and are in between a full block (16 pixels) and a slab (8 pixels) at 12.

There are two types of trough block.

Wooden Trough

Wooden Trough

Wooden troughs are a rustic, classic-looking option for farmers. They use the vanilla barrel texture.

A single wooden trough has a 3-item inventory. A double wooden trough has a 6-item inventory.

Wooden troughs are crafted in sets of two, with 5x Planks and 2x Iron Nugget. While they use a "spruce" barrel texture, wooden troughs can be crafted with any plank type, including modded planks.

Metal Trough

Metal Trough

Metal troughs are a more rugged, industrial option for more intensive needs. They use the vanilla cauldron texture.

A single metal trough has a 6-item inventory. A double metal trough has a 12-item inventory. Since metal troughs have twice the possible space of their wooden counterparts, they may be a better investment for players who feed lots of animals.

Metal troughs are crafted in sets of two, with 5x Iron Ingot and 2x Iron Nugget.
