Causes are an optional part of a player’s character. They simply describe a traumatic aspect of the character's personality, history, physical description or personal choice, and permanently affect the character’s playstyle like attributes and skills as well as the adventure. Some causes may have certain restrictions but may be also limited in some exceptional cases like when the narrator or a specific adventure asks for it.

Another type of cause are status effects. They are usually only temporary and most widely applied from an effect. Causes however always provide some bonuses as well as negative effects that have a more or less direct impact to the character itself
