Critical Roll

A critical die roll is a mechanic used to signify an exceptional success or failure. A critical success occurs whenever a player or the narrator rolls a natural 20 without any bonuses applied on a d20 die. The result is a guaranteed success, regardless of the overall outcome of a check or attack roll. In essence, a critical success represents a stroke of luck, extraordinary skill, or a well-placed strike, resulting in a more significant positive outcome.

On the other hand, a critical failure occurs whenever the roll is a natural 1 without any bonuses applied on a d20 die. The result is a guaranteed failure, regardless of the overall outcome of a check or attack roll. In contrast to a critical success, a critical failure represents a stroke of bad luck or misfortune, resulting in a more significant negative outcome.

A critical success in combat is called critical hit and denotes a mechanic used to signify an exceptionally successful attack. It causes increased damage and is a guaranteed hit, regardless of the target’s armor class. Whenever a character receives a critical hit, that character immediately rolls another d20 die to determine the natural damage instead. Then adds any relevant modifiers as normal.

Critical rolls may be also limited in some exceptional cases like when the narrator or a specific adventure asks for it
